Here at Black Fin, we recently tried an experiment using MaxCDN to determine whether it would increase the speed of our website. When we began to use the service, the speed improvement was simply mind-boggling. Before, the front page of the site loaded in 4.15 seconds. Now, however, the front page loads in 2.35 seconds – almost two full seconds faster. You’ll want to know how we did this, right?
What is a CDN?
CDN stands for Content Delivery Networks, a network of geographically dispersed services that deliver cached content from websites to users based on the origin of static content and the geographic locations of the users. When the user’s browser requests a static file that is linked to a CDN, the CDN then redirects the request from the originating site’s server to a PoP2 that is located closest to the user. In other words, the user’s proximity to web servers impacts the site’s load time. The closer the CDN server is to the user, the faster the site loads for them.
Why Use MaxCDN?
MaxCDN is one of the largest Content Delivery Network providers and is most effective on websites that are image-heavy and that store relatively large amounts of data. As you can see above, once we began to use a CDN on GoBlackFin.com, the site loaded faster by nearly two seconds. Another benefit is that a CDN such as MaxCDN allows you to distribute the load to multiple servers instead of having your entire load on your main server, thus reducing the likelihood that your server will crash due to heavy traffic.
At GoBlackFin.com, we have also noticed an increase in the number of pages viewed per user, an increase in the total number of pageviews, and a decline in bounce rate. Clearly, a faster site means an improved user experience. By the same token, Google has clearly stated that quicker sites tend to rank higher in the search engine results. Simply speaking, MaxCDN can make your site faster, so it may be in your best interest to combine it with your current SEO marketing methods to get your firm noticed.
MaxCDN is also pretty easy to set up on WordPress, and we integrated it into our website by using the W3 Total Cache plugin. After we installed the plugin, we went into our settings to sign up for MaxCDN.com. Since we signed up for MaxCDN through the plugin, we were able to purchase it for only $7 a month – not bad considering we would receive a two-second reduction in loading speed for a 6.5MB page.
