Let us say here at the very beginning, in the remainder of 2019, it’s going to be important to understand Google RankBrain. At least understand it to a certain extent, anyway.
If you guessed that it has something to do with ranking, well, you’ve guessed correctly and are in the right place. And as we’ll see, it’s a bit different than optimizing to rank as we traditionally know it.
But hey, before we go any further, we want to let you know that this is a topic we covered in our 2019 Law Firm Marketing Trends Report.
We publish this report every year, and we are particularly excited about the 19 total trends we covered and see taking center stage this year in the realm of SEO for law firms and all things digital marketing.

And now, let’s dive into Google RankBrain..
What Is Google RankBrain?
RankBrain is a machine-learning AI system that helps Google sort queries. It was announced in 2015 and is a part of Google’s larger Hummingbird algorithm update.
And we’ll just say now, that yes, it’s very important. In fact, RankBrain is the third most important factor when it comes to ranking (after content and backlinks).
Therefore, it’s imperative that it’s taken into consideration when optimizing your site and content.
So, what exactly is it that RankBrain does?
Besides helping to process search results, it helps Google understand what the user is searching for. RankBrain works to interpret queries.
Can I Optimize My Content For RankBrain?
The answer here is a little vague; yes, kind of.
Not in the traditional sense of SEO.
Since RankBrain works to interpret queries, it’s not looking solely at tangible (if something online can be tangible) factors such as keywords, link diversity or anchor text.
For example, keywords. With RankBrain, it’s more than just using the right words, it’s all about matching the keywords to user intent.
And what are some other factors that RankBrain uses to sort content?
RankBrain like freshness, relatability to similar topics, and truly in-depth content (another trend we cover in our Marketing Trends Report, hint hint).
And those are the factors that we need to focus on when thinking about optimizing for RankBrain.
If you want some practical tips on strategy and how to actually accomplish this, it’s all covered in our most recent Trends Report.
